  AREOLA REDUCTIONYou may be surprised to learn that many women considering breast implants or breast augmentation in New Jersey are also considering areola reduction surgery. Some women’s nipples are inverted, or turned inward. Some women feel their nipples protrude too far. For others, the problem is areolas that are too big or too puffy. But no matter what the problem is areola surgery can often be a feasible solution.What many women think of as "the nipple" is actually made of two parts: the nipple and the areola. The nipple is the projected part and the areola is the dark pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple. Areola reduction surgery aims to reduce enlarged areolas. Areola reduction surgery is typically performed under light sedation, general anesthesia or even local anesthetic. The procedure usually takes about two hours to complete. In areola reduction surgery, incisions are made in two concentric circles around the edges of the areola. Then, a small amount of tissue and skin is removed, taking care to leave the area around the nipple intact. The surgeon then closes the incision with sutures around the areola that are pulled in to tighten the skin around the areola. The scar is hidden around the edge of the areola and will likely fade with time. What to Expect After Areola Reduction SurgeryMost patients are able to go home shortly after their surgery, as areola reduction surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis.
